On Saturday night, a tragic event unfolded in the Umucheke Okwe autonomous community, located in the Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State. Unknown gunmen attacked the community, killing seven people, including the President General of the community and six village leaders.
According to sources, the gunmen stormed a weekly meeting held at the President General’ s shop in the community market. Without warning, they opened fire, killing all the community leaders present. The assailants then set the shop ablaze, leaving the bodies of the victims behind.
A community member, who wished to remain anonymous, described the horrific scene. ” Gunmen have just shot dead the President General of Umucheke Okwe and six village heads, ” he said.
The motive for this brutal attack remains unknown, as the source added, ” Nobody understands the reason for the assault. No one knows the purpose of the meeting. ”
The incident has left the community in a state of shock and fear. Many villagers have fled their homes, fearing for their lives. The usually bustling community market is now deserted, with an eerie silence hanging over the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command has yet to respond to the incident. Efforts to contact the Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful, as his phone remained switched off.
