June 30, 2023, will be remembered as a dark day in the annals of Nigerian history, as the senseless killing of Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor, a mother of four, shook the very foundations of humanity. The 70- year- old woman was accused of witchcraft and brutally burnt to death in Old Netim, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, is a stark reminder of the dangers of witchcraft branding and the need for urgent action to address this menace. According to eyewitnesses, Mrs. Itagbor was accused of inflicting illness on a youth in the community, a claim that was never substantiated. Despite reporting the matter to the police, no action was taken, emboldening the perpetrators to carry out their heinous act.
On June 13, 2023, a group of youths, suspected to be gangsters, were involved in a fatal accident while heading to an inauguration reception. The next day, they dragged Mrs. Itagbor out of her house, accusing her of masterminding the accident using witchcraft. The mob, fueled by superstition and misinformation, beat her and set her ablaze, watching as she burned to ashes.
The police, who were informed of the incident, failed to intervene, allowing the perpetrators to carry out their brutal act with impunity. The remnants of Mrs. Itagbor’ s body were swept into the gutters, and the road was washed, as if to erase any evidence of the crime.
This incident is not an isolated case. In October 2022, five people were killed and buried in a forest over witchcraft allegations in Ndon Nwong village, Okurikang, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. In early June 2023, a woman was beheaded in Efondo, Akpabuyo, over alleged witchcraft, leading to a crisis in the area.
The killing of Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor is a dark stain on the conscience of Nigeria, and it is essential that we learn from this tragedy to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The time for action is now.
