Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti and an ally of President Bola Tinubu, has highlighted the challenges posed by the cultural practice of marrying multiple wives and having many children in Northern Nigeria.
Fayose pointed out that these practices significantly burden the government and exacerbate the country’s population crisis.
During an interview on Channels TV on Monday night, Fayose shared a conversation with a government employee who earned a meager salary of N34,000 yet had four wives and 16 children.
Fayose argued that addressing Nigeria’s economic issues requires more than just governmental efforts; it also necessitates changes in societal behavior and family planning practices.
He suggested that the cultural norms of having large families are part of the internal problems that need addressing to alleviate economic strain.
Fayose’s comments come amid public discontent with the current economic hardships under Tinubu’s administration, characterized by a high cost of living.
However, Fayose defended the current administration, stating that it is unreasonable to expect solutions within one year for problems that have been long-standing.
He pointed out that the hunger crisis began before Tinubu’s tenure, noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari served eight years without significant protests over hunger.
Fayose emphasized the complexity of governing Nigeria and suggested that a fair assessment of a government should be over a mid-term period rather than within the first year.
