A pro- government group, the Coalition of Northern Youths Leaders Forum, has been recruited by the Nigerian government to distance itself from the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, set to take place on August 1 across the country.
According to sources, each member of the group received a payment of N1500 to withdraw their support for the protest. The aim of this move appears to be to create the impression that Northern youths have withdrawn from the mass action, undermining the genuine intentions of the protest.
This information was disclosed at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, led by Murtala Mohammed (Gamji), the National President of the Coalition.
During the conference, Mohammed criticized the promoters of the protest, claiming they did not have the country’ s best interests at heart. Despite this, he acknowledged that the government led by President Bola Tinubu had inflicted significant pain, hardship, and poverty on Nigerians since taking office.
Reports suggest that some members of the Coalition received N1500 each to attend the event. Additionally, it was revealed that certain government officials attempted to bribe other youth leaders in the North to disrupt and frustrate the planned protest.
One participant shared his experience on Facebook, stating, ” Nigeria can’ t get it right again. Northern youths leaders invited me for a meeting at Royal Continental Hotel Zone 4 in Abuja. At the end of the meeting, N1500 was given to each of us, saying that there’ s no protest again. ”
In a statement obtained by SaharaReporters, the Coalition declared, ” The Northern Youths Leaders Forum wishes to dissociate its members and the entire youths of northern Nigeria from the planned protest against the Federal Government of Nigeria by some disgruntled elements who do not mean well for the country.
The statement continued, ” Northern Youths Leaders Forum appreciates the fact that there is hardship in the land but acknowledges the government’ s efforts in tackling these issues, such as the recently granted local government autonomy, which will bring governance to the grassroots, and the creation of a livestock ministry to address the long- standing farmers- herders crisis. ”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) cautioned President Bola Tinubu and security agencies against targeting the leaders and promoters of the upcoming nationwide protest, ‘ Day of Rage, ‘ against economic hardship in the country.
The NLC emphasized that millions of Nigerians are angry about the state of the national economy and advised the government to engage in discussions with the protest leaders to address their grievances.
