INDEFINITE STRIKE! ! See The Amount NLC Will Present During Meeting With Tinubu That Might Make Them Go On Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has disclosed that it would insist on ₦250, 000 minimum wage during the planned meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday (today). Recall that Naija News reported that Labour leaders were invited to a meeting with the President in furtherance of Tinubu’ s promise to hold more consultations with stakeholders on the minimum wage.
The proposed meeting comes about a month after the President said in his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage would soon be sent to the National Assembly for passage. However, the Head of Public Affairs of the NLC, Benson Upah, told Punch that the Congress would insist on its ₦250, 000 proposal during the session with the President.
We are going to the table with our demand of N250, 000 even as the cost of living has since moved up. We have been very reasonable and patriotic, ” Upah said. Tinubu had earlier received a report of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Akume received a report from the Tripartite Committee Chairman, Bukar Goni Aji, recommending a minimum wage of ₦62, 000 based on inputs from federal, state governments, and the Organized Private Sector. Labour demands ₦250, 000, while state governors may be unable to pay ₦62, 000.
The committee which was set up by the federal government to run a review of the new proposed minimum wage came out with their report which says that the Federal Government cannot afford to pay such an amount.
The federal government kicked against the high minimum wage proposed by Labour and advised that they should bring it down to N100, 000.
