The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly under intense pressure to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Nnamdi Kanu has been in federal government custody since June 2021 following his extradition from Kenya.
Sources within the government have indicated that Kanu’ s release may be imminent, although the specific terms of his potential release remain undisclosed. When contacted, the presidency declined to comment on the development.
The federal government, through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, has refused to reveal its plans, citing sub judice concerns. However, it has been gathered that the governors of the five states in the South- East are planning to formally present their resolution to President Tinubu.
At a meeting held on July 2, attended by Governors Hope Uzodinma of Imo, Alex Otti of Abia, Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and Peter Mbah of Enugu State, the governors resolved to interface with the federal government to secure Kanu’ s release.
The following day, senators from the South- East, under the aegis of the South- East Caucus of the Senate, met with the AGF. The leader of the Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, revealed that they had not only pleaded for Kanu’ s release but also submitted a passionate letter to President Tinubu.
Abaribe emphasized that unless Kanu is released, the social and economic activities in the South- East zone would continue to deteriorate. He lamented that Kanu’ s peaceful demands had been hijacked by hoodlums and criminals, resulting in the deaths of innocent people, including security personnel.
The South- East Caucus in the House of Representatives has also announced their support for Kanu’ s release. In a statement signed by 43 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu (Abia), Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi (Anambra), Caucus Leader Enwo Igariwey (Ebonyi), Deputy Leader Nnolim Nnaji (Enugu), and Secretary Miriam Onuoha (Imo), the lawmakers emphasized that a political solution is one of the quickest ways to restore peace in the region.
Renowned constitutional lawyer Professor Auwalu Yadudu has suggested that if the government can secure a commitment from South- East leaders, it could enter a ‘ nolle prosequi’ — a legal term meaning the discontinuation of a trial. Similarly, Professor Seyi Akinseye- George (SAN) added that an out- of- court settlement would require a political decision by the authorities.
Barrister Chukwudi Igwe highlighted a potential legal maneuver where the President, through the AGF, could withdraw the charges against Kanu.
As the situation unfolds, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on the federal government’ s next move, with many hoping for a resolution that will bring peace and stability to the South- East region.
