BREAKING ! NLC, TUC Announce Indefinite Strike Over Minimum Wage, SEE When They’ll Start & State They’ll Totally Shut- Down
In Abia State, Nigeria, the organized labour has issued a final ultimatum to the state government over the alleged non- payment of the N30, 000 minimum wage and the N35, 000 palliative award.
The state government, led by Governor Alex Otti, had promised to pay the new wages once the Federal Government concluded its negotiations with the organized labour. However, workers are frustrated with the lack of progress.
On July 8, 2024, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) sent a letter to Governor Alex Otti, through his Chief of Staff. The letter, signed by NLC Chairman Okoro Ogbonnaya and TUC Chairman Enogwe Ihechi, expressed their intent to commence an indefinite strike starting Monday, July 15, 2024, if their demands were not met.

The letter, which was seen by DAILY POST, explained that the final seven- day notice resulted from a general meeting held by the organized labour on July 8. The workers had previously given a 14- day ultimatum to the state government, which expired without any response or negotiation from the government regarding their demands.
The organized labour accused the Abia State government of not complying with the national directive to pay the new minimum wage and palliative award. They emphasized that the decision to go on strike was in alignment with national directives concerning the alleged non- compliance of the state government.
The letter stated: ” Organized labour hereby issues this final seven (7) days ultimatum with effect from the day of receipt of this letter and states unequivocally, that at the expiration of this ultimatum, on Sunday 00hr, there shall be no further communication with the government. Rather, the entire workforce of Abia State will proceed on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, 15th July, 2024. “
