JUST IN: Two Women Caught Posing as Visually Impaired Beggars
Begging on the streets has become a means of livelihood for some of society’s disabled individuals. However, not all beggars are truly physically or mentally challenged; some resort to deceit, pretending to be blind, mute, or otherwise impaired to solicit money from well-meaning citizens.
On a Saturday in November 2023, the “IGBOS LOVE THEMSELVES” non-governmental organization, dedicated to fostering a loving, harmonious, and informed society, exposed two women engaged in this fraudulent activity. The incident occurred on Ogui Road in Enugu state, Nigeria.
The CEO of the NGO and Gospel Truth page, Matthias Ezeaku, shared the story. He had encountered the two women while shopping for clothes at a boutique. They approached him, seeking assistance. Ezeaku, with a background in health, noticed that their eyes did not show typical signs of blindness, which raised his suspicions.
He began questioning the women, challenging their claim of being blind. Ezeaku offered to take them to an eye clinic for a medical evaluation. In a matter of minutes, the women confessed that they were not blind but had employed this strategy to support themselves.
Ezeaku took them to his office, where they revealed that they were from Imo state. They openly admitted that they had been deceiving people by feigning blindness. In response, Ezeaku decided to take them back to their villages, with the intent of helping them establish legitimate businesses and ensuring their children could return to school.
