In an unexpected turn of events, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Oyo State has taken disciplinary action against a Christ Apostolic Church branch in Iseyin after a violent attack on a Muslim family.
The incident, which occurred on Eld day, has sparked widespread condemnation from religious groups, including CAN and the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC).
According to Apostle Sunday Ogundairo, CAN chairman in Iseyin Local Government Area, the pastor and some congregation members of Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Imuse, Iseyin, were involved in the brutal attack on Mr. Sulaimon AbdulAzeez and his two wives.
The victims alleged that the pastor had hired soldiers to attack them, claiming they had slaughtered a ram facing the church.
The attack resulted in severe injuries, including a heavily pregnant woman being beaten and dragged to the church premises, and another woman’ s head being smashed.
Apostle Ogundairo confirmed that CAN has sanctioned the pastor and ordered him to relocate his church.
“I have gone round pleading with the Islamic scholars in Iseyinland. They should please soft-pedal their annoyance. It is glaring that the man (pastor) was guilty. CAN in Iseyin has also sanctioned the pastor and ordered him to look for another place to locate his church.
The case started since last year and we have always settled the issue before the one which happened on Sunday’, he said. He also stated that talks are ongoing with the Muslim community to maintain peace in the area.
The incident has been condemned by various religious groups, with MURIC s Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, attributing the violence to a misunderstanding over noise pollution, which the king of Iseyin had previously intervened in.
This incident highlights the need for religious tolerance and understanding in Nigeria. The attack on the Muslim family is unacceptable and has no place in a society that values peace and harmony.
The swift action taken by CAN to sanction the pastor and church is commendable, and efforts to maintain peace and dialogue between the Christian and Muslim communities in Iseyin are crucial.
