On Sunday, June 16, 2024, the residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in the Ijebu- Ode region of Ogun State were left in shock when Matthew James brutally killed his 55-year-old wife, Etim Mary, over allegations of adultery. The tragic event occurred around 8:00 p. m. on Sallah day. According to both police and community sources, James, who is now in police custody, committed the heinous act because he suspected his wife of having an affair with another man in their neighborhood. The sensitive nature of the case led an eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, to confirm that James was apprehended at the scene by officers from the Ijebu- Igbo Division.
The eyewitness further revealed that James and his late wife had made a ” blood covenant that forbade them from betraying each other. The source stated, “They had a blood covenant that they would not leave each other. James met Mary when she was older and had already raised children; they were not initially married.
James allegedly believed that their blood covenant bound them to stay together forever. In a fit of rage, he fatally attacked his wife with a machete. Remarkably, after committing the crime, James did not flee. Instead, he remained beside his wife’s lifeless body at the scene.
State police command spokeswoman Omolola Odutola provided additional details about the gruesome incident. She reported that neighbors found the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe slashes on her forehead, shoulders, and other body parts. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the attending physician declared her dead upon arrival.
Mary’ s body was taken to a general hospital in ljebu- Igbo, where a doctor confirmed her death. Her remains. have been placed at the Alayangbe Private Mortuary in Oke- Agbo, ljebu- Igbo, for an autopsy.
The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta for further investigation once the preliminary inquiry is completed.
