During a demonstration in Rivers State’ s Obi Akpor Local Government Area, irate teenagers toppled a statue of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT. A squabble over local government chairmen’ s terms of office set off the protest.
This disruption demonstrates the developing hostility between Nyesom Wike’ s and Governor Siminalayi Fubara’ s followers, the latter of whom took over as governor of Rivers State just three months prior.
A post on his official X account was made by Senator Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, mockingly criticizing the removal of local government chairmen that former Governor Nyesom Wike had put in Rivers State. After their terms ended, the chairmen were dismissed by Siminalayi Fubara, the current governor.
Sani argued that the removal could have been handled more diplomatically, saying ” you would have just gently unplugged them, wrapped them, put them in a carton, and kept them in the store. ” He expressed disappointment at the forceful removal, emphasising the need for a more civilised approach to politics.
He questioned the need for vandalism and emphasized the value of treating public property with respect. Sani emphasized the need of moderation and ethical conduct in public discourse.
