The Anambra State government, through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has turned over a couple and an accomplice to police for alleged human trafficking in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area. Police detained Temple and Ndubuisi Nwankwo, along with one Ebere, for attempting to sell their baby girl for N1 million. It was learned that the couple was suspected of selling their other two children, whom they said had died.
According to a statement made on Tuesday by the media aide to the Women Affairs Commissioner, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the arrests were the result of a thorough investigation by the community chairman, Mr. Arinzechukwu Azodo, who contacted the Women Affairs. Commissioner, Ify Obinabo.
The statement continued, According to Mr. Azodo, he was alerted by the commander of his team to a complaint of suspected trafficking in. the community, which he promptly informed the commissioner, who instructed him to go ahead and detain the individuals involved. Azodo added that after the arrest, they learned that the suspects were set to seal a deal worth one million naira.
On her part, one of the suspects, Ebere from Ukpo in the same local government area of the state, revealed that it was another suspect, Temple Nwankwo, her very good friend, who approached her one day informing her that she had twin babies for sale, despite the fact that she had already sold one of the twins. Ebere stated she agreed to collaborate with her and went on to connect her with a prospective buyer who needed a male child immediately.
“Ebere in her confession said that after their negotiation, they agreed to meet at Oye Agu to further seal the transaction but instead Temple requested an instant payment of one million naira in her account which the buyer objected to because he hadn’t seen the baby in question. This brought disagreement among them before Temple changed her mind and left them.
Temple stated that after Ebere made the request, she cautioned her not to engage her in such matters again, and that since then, Ebere has been coming to her house in her absence to meet her daughter despite her repeated warnings. Some members of the community have accused Temple of trafficking with her husband, Ndubuisi Nwankwo, as an accomplice, because they haven’t seen some of her children in a long time. ”
Meanwhile, when queried about the location of the two children, the parents claimed that they had died.”
