In a tragic turn of events, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera announced on Tuesday that there were no survivors from the plane crash that claimed the life of Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others. President Chakwera, in a somber televised address, stated, “The plane has been found and I am deeply saddened and sorry to inform you all, it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy. “The search efforts, led by the Malawi Defence Forces and supported by neighboring countries with helicopters and drones, culminated in the discovery of the wreckage in the fog- shrouded Chikangawa Forest.
The III-fated flight departed from Lilongwe at 9:00 am local time, headed to Mzuzu for the funeral of a former cabinet minister. The aircraft failed to land in Mzuzu due to poor visibility and was instructed to return to Lilongwe. The last signal from the plane was transmitted from a tower south of Mzuzu, guiding the search teams to the crash site.
Among the victims was former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri. Photographs from the scene shared by the rescue team showed debris scattered on a foggy slope, confirming the plane’s identity. General Paul Valentino Phiri, the army commander, highlighted the international cooperation in the search operation, expressing gratitude for the swift assistance provided.
Vice President Saulos Chilima, 51, was a significant political figure in Malawi, first elected in 2014. Despite his popularity, particularly among the youth, his career faced turmoil in 2022 when he was arrested and charged with corruption. However, the charges were dropped last month, allowing him to resume his duties. The loss has sent shockwaves across Malawi, with citizens and politicians alike expressing their grief. The People’s Development Party (PDP) demanded clarity from the government regarding the crash and the circumstances leading to the aircraft’ s disappearance.
