Nigerians In GREAT SHOCK After A Gov Sealed N100Billion Deal With A Company Registered Under 6 Days
Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the governor of Enugu State, disclosed in a tweet on his official Twitter account (X) that he had struck a 100 billion naira contract with a business to revive the embattled Enugu State United Palm Products Limited, or UPPL.
As per the governor’s statement, UPPL is an agricultural and agro- industrialization project of the late Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara, the former Premier of the Eastern Region. The project has been left fallow for a long time, but the governor is eager to work with Pragmatic Palms to turn it into a productive asset so that he can fulfill his campaign promise for Enugu State. When it was discovered that the aforementioned company had only recently registered on May 6, these photos caused a stir online and raised many concerns regarding the transaction. Below are a few responses.
Family ties and business deals drive most government appointments. This allows the ruling elite politicians, officials, and their business partners to guarantee their own wealth by appointing lucrative contracts to preferred supporters and engaging in backroom deals. Numerous government workers made above $1 million in salary annually in 2018.
Every level of the Nigerian government is rife with corruption. Estimates of the annual costs to the nation of corruption inside the state machinery range from significant contract fraud at the top to small-scale bribes, money laundering schemes, embezzlement, and snatching paychecks from fictitious staff.
A recently published international study on the relationship between corruption and democracy suggests that Nigeria faces its greatest obstacle.
An NGO called the Open Society Foundations linked widespread corruption to Nigeria’ s democratic shortcomings in a report it released in September 2023.
This is consistent with an international agreement that corruption is widespread in Nigeria and impedes the country’s progress. The 36 state governors and President Bola Tinubu should develop thoughtful plans to counteract this deeply embedded sleaze culture.
