A recent terrorist attack on the palace of the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of three people and the abduction of several others, including the Shamaki (chief details) of the Emir, Buhari Yusuf. The attack, led by notorious gang leader Isyaku Majo, targeted the Emir’s palace in an attempt to abduct Emir Muhammadu Suleiman, but was thwarted by the intervention of soldiers stationed in the town.
The assault, which began on Wednesday night, involved over 150. terrorists riding motorcycles and aimed to disrupt communication by vandalizing an MTN facility in Zurmi. The primary motive behind the attack was to abduct the Emir, whom the terrorists accused of indifference to the alleged maltreatment of Fulani residents in the area by local vigilantes.
Eyewitnesses reported that the terrorists killed three people at the palace gate and abducted three others, including the Shamaki and two residents. The soldiers stationed in the town managed to force the terrorists to retreat, but not before they had achieved their primary goal of abducting several residents. The attack has led to widespread panic in the town, with about two- thirds of residents fleeing and more daily since the incident. The terrorists also targeted the residence of Sani Maidaji, breaking into his house using a digger and abducting his newly wedded wife and two male children.
In a video posted on Facebook, Isyaku Majo claimed responsibility for the attacks and demanded an end to the persecution of Fulani people in the area by vigilantes. Buhari Yusuf, the abducted Shamaki, pleaded with the Emir to address the grievances of the Fulani community and cease the violence against them.
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State, particularly in Zurmi, which shares a border with Niger Republic and Katsina State. The recent attack underscores the urgent need for effective security measures to protect the lives and property of residents in the area.
