POLITICAL TURMOIL! See Unbelievable Reasons Behind Edo State Deputy Governor’s Impeachment
On Monday, April 8, the Edo State House of Assembly carried out the impeachment of the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu,
According to reports from Leadership newspaper, Shaibu’ s impeachment came after the assembly endorsed the findings of a seven- man investigative committee tasked with examining allegations of misconduct against him.
This decision represents the climax of the ongoing political tension between the deputy governor and his superior, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as also highlighted by Vanguard newspaper.
The assembly cited the substantiation of allegations, particularly regarding the unauthorized disclosure of official government documents, as grounds for the impeachment.
According to PM News, 18 out of the 20 members present during the plenary session voted in favor of the panel report, while one member dissented.
Obaseki- Shaibu Political Feud Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, announced his gubernatorial bid for the 2024 elections in November 2023, asserting that no one could hinder his ambition.
Despite his three decades of political experience, Shaibu faced criticism from Governor Obaseki, who deemed him” overambitious.”
This tension escalated as Obaseki relocated Shaibu’s office from the government house to a different location in Benin, the state capital. The impeachment of Shaibu was subsequently grounded on various allegations of misconduct.
The key reasons cited by the Edo State House of Assembly include:
Misconduct and Breach of Trust: Shaibu was accused of leaking sensitive government information to the public, which is considered a serious breach of trust and misconduct.
Violation of Secrecy Oath and Perjury: The lawmakers alleged that Shaibu violated his oath of secrecy by attaching top government secrets to a lawsuit he filed, thereby committing an act of gross misconduct.
Additionally, he was accused of perjury for swearing to an affidavit with false claims about being prevented from attending State Executive meetings.
Shaibu’s political aspirations and his actions played a significant role in the tensions. His intention to run for governorship in the upcoming election created friction with Governor Godwin. Obaseki.
