President Bola Tinubu’ s administration surprised many Nigerians following the report that a notorious Kidnapper, Hamisu Baba aka Wadume, has finally regained his freedom after spending just two years in Kuje prison despite that he was sentenced to seven years impression.
It could be recalled that the kidnap kingpin who was accused of masterminding different kidnapping incidents in the Taraba State was arrested by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspection General of Police on August 6, 2019.
He, however, managed to escape with the alleged help of the Nigerian Soldiers. It was reported that the military personnel attached to Battalion 93, Ibbi- Takum road, led by Tijjani Balarabe, attacked the police officers who arrested Wadume.
They reportedly set the Kidnap kingpin free and also killed some police officers who arrested him while many others sustained various degrees of injuries.
3 years after the incident, the notorious Kidnapper was re- arrested in Kano and was subsequently charged to court on kidnapping charges. In July 2020, he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Meanwhile, he reportedly regained his freedom last weekend because he seven years jail term was dated back to 2019 when he was first arrested. The development has been generating reactions from Nigerians.
In his words, the Executive Director, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) Auwalu Rafsanjani said it’s unfortunate that people who were supposed to receive stiff punishment for their atrocities were pampered by the government.
He claimed that the recent development shows how terrible the justice system of Nigeria has become, stressing that someone who has committed many unrepairable atrocities is now treated as a king.
“Somebody who has committed these degrees of atrocities, you are now treating him like a king; this is going to motivate and encourage more people to commit these crimes because he will come back and continue to terrorise the public. This in an ideal society should not happen, ” he said.
