Reports have emerged indicating that gunmen have abducted an unspecified number of students while traveling along the East- West road in Ughelli, Delta state.
The incident is said to have occurred on Friday, March 29, although details remain scarce at the time of this report.
According to Channels Television, the students, who were traveling in a Sienna bus, were returning from Calabar, Cross River state, when they were ambushed by the hoodlums.
A security source, quoted by Vanguard newspaper, revealed that the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N10 million for the release of the abducted students.
The abduction has heightened concerns about the security situation along the East- West road and raised alarm among residents and travelers in the region. Authorities are yet to provide further information on the incident, but efforts are likely underway to secure the safe release of the abducted students and apprehend the perpetrators.
Security agencies have not yet provided any comments on the reported abduction. Nonetheless, Nigeria is known to have one of the highest rates of kidnapping for ransom globally.
According to a report from the Lagos- based risk consultancy SBM Intelligence, between July 2022 and June 2023, at least 3, 495 individuals were abducted in 582 separate incidents across the country.
In recent times, these abductions have primarily occurred in the northwestern and central regions of Nigeria. Here, numerous armed groups frequently target villagers and travelers with the aim of extorting ransom payments.
This trend has led families and communities to resort to selling assets such as land, cattle, and grain to secure the release of their abducted loved ones. In some cases, crowdfunding through social media platforms has also been utilized as a means of raising funds for ransom payments.

Recently, gunmen who abducted 287 students and teachers from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School in Kuriga, Kaduna State also demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release. These criminals have also imposed a deadline, set to expire on March 27, 2024, for the payment of the ransom.
According to Reuters, the bandits made contact with a spokesperson for the families of the hostages on Tuesday, conveying their ransom demand. The abduction took place on March 7, 2024, when the schoolchildren were forcefully taken into the forest by the hoodlums.
Jubril Aminu, a community leader acting as the spokesperson for the families of the hostages, disclosed that he received a call from the kidnappers on Tuesday. The situation remains tense as negotiations continue between the families and the abductors in hopes of securing the safe release of the hostages before the deadline expires.
