A soldier, identified as Suleiman Sidiq, who is stationed at Sector 3 Garrison in Monguno, Borno State, is accused of stabbing Marufu Keji, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of a station in Ilesha Baruba, Baruteen Local Government Area of Kwara State, following dispute over a mentioned land.
A video of the altercation, which has been widely circulated on various social media, shows the soldier brandishing a jackknife and yelling at the DPO and other officers present at the station.
” I will kill you and spill your blood; I am not a coward. I am a soldier; you can record me, ” he can be heard saying in the video.
DSP Toun Ejire- Adeyemi, the spokeswoman of the Kwara Police Command, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, who visited the command on Thursday night.
In a subsequent statement released on behalf of CP Victor Olaiya, Toun conveyed that ” the parties involved were warned to maintain peace and instructed to return on Thursday (today) for further resolution. ”
The situation escalated into violence when the complainant, Suleiman Sidiq, who was evidently under the influence of intoxicating substances, exhibited extreme unruliness.
Despite all efforts and attempts at persuasion to calm him down, they proved futile. Suleiman Sidiq proceeded to assault the Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Okeowo Joel. During the intervention led by the Divisional Police Officer, DSP Marufu Keji, Suleiman Sidiq wielded a jackknife and inflicted severe injuries on the head and left hand of the officer.
In the aftermath of the assault, he managed to flee the station by scaling the fence before authorities initiated a pursuit and successfully apprehended him.
The statement further indicates that the DPO is currently receiving medical treatment for the sustained injuries, with assurance that additional details regarding the incident will be disclosed as the investigation unfolds.
