In the aftermath of the recent attack on military personnel in Okuama Community, Delta State, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has accused the military of a similar assault on Igbomotoru 2 in Bomo- Ibe Clan, Bayelsa State, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
While condemning the killing of military personnel in Okuama, the council clarified that Okuama is not situated within Bayelsa State and emphasized that the incident did not occur in Ijaw territory.
President of the IYC, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, issued a statement on Wednesday, highlighting that the attack on military personnel was unrelated to the Ijaw nation. The council expressed readiness to assist in investigating the incident and urged collaboration with security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
Emphasizing the need to avoid punishing the entire community for the actions of a few individuals, the council pleaded for a targeted approach in apprehending the culprits.
Part of the statement read as, ” We condemn in the strongest terms the killing of military personnel on official peacekeeping duty in Okuama Community, Delta State. Such actions are reprehensible and cannot be justified under any circumstance. “
