16 people were taken prisoner by robbers during their Wednesday, February 28 raid on the Gonin-Gora hamlet, a Kaduna suburb in the Chikun Local Government Area.
The next day, hundreds of community youths blocked the Abuja- Kaduna road In protest over the event, according to The Nation.
Almost twice the national budget for 2024, or N40 trillion, was allegedly demanded as ransom by the criminals, according to claims made by community leaders on Monday
In Kuriga, another town in Chikun, 287 pupils were taken into custody just four days before the ransom demand.
As a condition for freeing their hostages, the kidnappers demanded N40 trillion in addition to 11 Hilux vehicles and 150 brand-new motorcycles, according to John Yusuf, one of the leaders of the Gonin- Gora Community.
According to Yusuf, The bandits have contacted us. They are demanding N40 trillion, 11 Hilux vans, and 150 motorcycles for the release of the 16 people they are holding captive. “Where are we going to get this kind of money? Even if we sell the entire community, we cannot raise N40 trillion. Even Nigeria as a country has never made a budget of N40 trillion.
*The abductions happened twice within a four-day interval. During the first attack, three people were kidnapped, while in the second attack, 13 people were abducted, bringing the total number of people being held captive to 16.
The army is trying, even though they are seriously overstretched. Whenever we make distress calls, they come.
But the problem is that before they reach the community, the bandits would have done what they wanted and left. Can any government pay such huge ransom?
