Mr. Obi, speaking on X on Monday, expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the Ukrainian government to Nigeria. He lamented the current situation where Nigeria, once economically self-sufficient with abundant natural resources, now relies on aid from war-torn Ukraine. Mr. Obi described this reliance as a national disgrace resulting from years of leadership failure. He emphasized the need for urgent reflection and a reevaluation of national priorities and resource management.
Last week, Ukraine’ s donation of 25, 000 tonnes of wheat as emergency food aid to 1. 3 million vulnerable people in northeast Nigeria was a crucial Intervention amidst rising inflation and food prices. Mr. Obi stressed the Importance of Nigeria aggressively restructuring its priorities by investing in productive sectors like agriculture.

The former Anambra governor highlighted the significance of addressing insecurity to enable farmers to return to their fields, support a productive manufacturing sector, and bolster small businesses. He noted that Inflation has led to unbearable food prices, prompting protests in various Nigerian cities, including Niger, Kano, Osun, Ibadan, and Lagos.
Recent incidents, such as the raid on a government-owned warehouse in Abuja by residents looting food and other items, as well as similar incidents in Suleja, Niger, and Zaria, Kaduna, underscore the severity of the food crisis. The rising cost of living predates President Bola Tinubu’s administration but has intensified since he took office last year, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, resulting in a significant increase in petrol and food
prices.
In response to public outcry over soaring food prices driven by skyrocketing inflation, President Tinubu directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release approximately 42, 000 metric tonnes of grain, including maize, millet, and garri. He also instructed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, along with the State Security Service and Nigerian police, to crack down on food hoarders.
Furthermore, the Nigeria Customs Service initiated the distribution of confiscated food items to alleviate hunger in the country. However, the process was halted after a stampede in Lagos resulted in six fatalities. Despite this setback, efforts to address the food crisis continue, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate the impact of rising food prices and inflation on Nigerians.
