Vice-President Kashim Shettima has alleged that some politicians who lost the 2023 general election are scheming to destabilize Nigeria, harming the country by smuggling food to other nations to cause food inflation. Speaking at a conference on Public Wealth Management in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr Shettima said that 45 trucks loaded with maize were intercepted while trying to cross the border to neighbouring countries. He revealed that there are 32 Illegal routes used by smugglers in the Ilela axis alone, and that the seizure of the trucks led to a drop in the price of maize by N10,000.

He did not name the politicians he was accusing, but it is widely known that Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who were the main rivals of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election, have been critical of his economic policies.
Mr Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy and float the naira has been blamed for the skyrocketing of petrol price from N145 to N630, and the depreciation of the naira from N360 to N1, 825 against the dollar, as of Tuesday. The president has defended his policies. as necessary reforms to boost the economy and reduce dependence on oil, but many Nigerians have complained of hardship and rising cost of living.
According to a market analysis by
Peoples Gazette on February 7, food prices have risen by more than 100 per cent since Mr Tinubu took office last year. Soaring economic inflation, estimated at 29. 9 by the National Bureau of Statistics, has pushed food prices to extremely high levels lately, prompting Nigerians to stage protests in Oyo, Niger, Osun, Kano and Lagos, Mr Tinubu’s native state.
Mr Tinubu, reacting to public anger over the high cost of food caused by surging inflation in the country, had ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to distribute about 42, 000 metric tonnes of grain, such as maize, millet and garri. He also instructed National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the State Security
Service and the police to pursue food
hoarders.
The International Monetary Fund, in a
brief of its evaluation of Nigeria’s
economy, praised Mr Tinubu’s administration for structural reforms, abolishing fuel subsidies and liberalising the naira. The IMF also said Mr Tinubu’s distribution of cereals from the grain reserve, provided subsidised fertilizer to farmers,” among others, are actions” to mitigate the effect of rapidly rising inflation on living standards.”
