Iran has launched six ballistic missiles at the United States’ Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions between both countries.
The missile attack, which sent shockwaves across Doha, the Qatari capital, comes days after U.S. bombers dropped massive 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on three Iranian underground nuclear facilities—an action confirmed by President Donald Trump, who said the sites were “completely obliterated.”
Iran’s military announced the retaliatory strike via its X handle, describing it as a direct response to what it called an unprovoked U.S. assault on Iranian soil. “Watch the moment Iran launches advanced ballistic missiles at American terrorist forces at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar,” the post read.
Shortly after the missile launches, explosions were reportedly heard over Doha, and Qatar temporarily closed its airspace “to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.” A Western diplomat confirmed there had been a credible Iranian threat against U.S. military presence in the region since midday.
The U.S. embassy in Qatar had earlier issued a warning, urging American citizens to shelter in place “out of an abundance of caution.”
Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, Israel expanded its own offensive by bombing a prison in Tehran known to house political detainees, signaling a shift towards targeting the core of Iran’s regime.
