In a shocking turn of events a 49-year- old man, Lawrence Itape, has been apprehended for the alleged murder of his wife, Rebecca, apparently over a water-related issue.
The incident took place at Seaside Estate, Badore, Ajah area of Lagos, Itape, a father-of-two, reportedly arrived home from work and discovered there was no water for him to take a bath. Angered by the water shortage, an argument ensued between Itape and his wife, he questioned her on why she hadn’t purchased water, as is customary for residents of the area to buy water from designated boreholes.
Itape then instructed his wife to accompany him to purchase water in three jerry cans for bathing and drinking purposes, however, a disagreement occurred as Rebecca chose to purchase batteries for their non- operational wall clock instead. This decision led to a heated argument during which Itape asserted that they had agreed she would no longer buy wall clock batteries due to her tendency to purchase the incorrect batteries.
The quarrel further deteriorated as Rebecca allegedly began insulting Itape s parents, which Itape claimed had become a regular feature during their arguments.
The quarrel escalated to the point that Itape got infuriated. He stabbed his 47- year-old wife in the neck with a kitchen knife during the intense altercation, such conflicting reports, pervaded with tension, shed light on the events leading up to her death.
Their two children sought help from neighbors who were alerted by the commotion, observers noted multiple stab wounds on the victim’s body. The incident occurred at around 11: 30 pm, according to Lagos State Police Command spokesman SP Benjamin Hudenyin, a team of detectives in charge of Lagbansa division, CSP Stephen Abolarin, promptly arrived at the scene and apprehended Lawrence Itape.
Itape was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Lagos, for further investigation. The police also recovered the knife used in the attack and deposited the deceased’ s body at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy, tragic as it is, the incident highlights significant concerns in society, Including access to water and mental health.
The episode has generated a wave of reactions, calling for increased mental health awareness, access to potable water, and broader support systems for individuals and families.
