In a significant development, individuals believed to be involved in criminal activities were apprehended by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), working in conjunction with personnel from the 176 Guards Battalion of the Nigerian Army. Commandant Olusola Odumosu of the FCT NSCDC revealed this development on Wednesday during the parade of 42 suspects at the Command Headquarters in Abuja. Among the disclosed Information was the acknowledgment by the suspects of having sponsors.
Furthermore, Odumosu announced the
successful outcome of the Corps’ joint effort with the Department of State Services (DSS), resulting in the apprehension of five members of a vigilante team implicated in the vandalism of critical national assets within the FCT. The suspects were found in possession of sharp Implements. including daggers, knives, and machetes. Odumosu, who recently convened a
meeting with NSCDC intelligence teams, area commanders, and divisional officers to enhance the Corps’ strategies in response to prevailing security challenges in the FCT, emphasized the significance of intelligence gathering in combating criminal activities within the territory.
During the parade of suspects, Odumosu remarked, “I directed our officers and personnel to intensify efforts against criminal elements through enhanced intelligence gathering. I am pleased to report that our efforts are yielding results. He disclosed that acting on credible intelligence, the joint operation led to the arrest of 42 suspected bandits and terrorists masquerading as miners of solid minerals.
The suspects were apprehended on Monday, 11th February 2024, in the forest of Tsaumi Village, adjacent to Lambata in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. Initial investigations. suggest that the apprehended individuals, purportedly fleeing military operations in Zamfara State, were traversing through Niger State en route to the FCT. However, they failed to provide evidence substantiating their alleged mining activities, raising suspicions of ulterior motives.
Furthermore, the suspects confessed to having sponsors, indicating a broader
network supporting their illicit activities. Odumosu assured that investigations
into their sponsors are ongoing, with updates to be provided upon conclusion. Moreover, operational collaboration with
the Department of State Security Services led to the arrest of Bartholomew Anthony and his
accomplices for their involvement in vandalism and theft of armoured cables within the FCT. The apprehended individuals, purportedly affiliated with a vigilante group, utilized their purported security credentials to perpetrate criminal acts.
Odumosu reiterated the commitment of
security agencies to rid the FCT of criminal elements, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. He emphasized that ensuring the safety of residents remains a
collective responsibility.
