The Baptist Conference in Plateau State issued a fervent plea to the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the Caleb Mutfwang- led state government to address the relentless onslaughts and bloodshed ravaging the state.
During the culmination of the church’s 47th Annual Conference in Jos on Saturday, Rev. Koeleh Saleh, President of the Plateau Baptist Conference, delivered a compelling call to action. He disclosed that within the past eight months, over 62 members of the church, including pastors and their children, fell victim to the series of attacks that besieged numerous communities in Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Amidst the gathering attended by various dignitaries, including Governor Mutfwang, Saleh recounted the grim reality of repeated assaults on Baptist churches and the tragic loss of their congregants over the preceding months. Particularly poignant was the devastation witnessed in Mangu LGA, where thirty-three church members were mercilessly killed on May 15 and 16, 2023, with eight more succumbing to the harsh aftermath of displacement due to hardship and illness.
The somber narrative continued with the recounting of the June 15, 2023, attack on Hirpia, a Christian enclave in Bokkos LGA, resulting in the brutal murder of an additional five church members, among them the wife and two children of Rev Emmanuel Makama, pastor of Nasara Baptist Church.
Saleh underscored the profound toll exacted by the assaults, not only in lives lost and injuries sustained but also in the wanton destruction and economic upheaval inflicted upon the affected communities. He lamented the continued occupation of these deserted locales by marauders, lamenting the glaring injustice endured by the populace.
Drawing attention to the disproportionate impact suffered by Baptist congregations, Saleh cited the tragic fate of Rev. Mangmos Tangshak, the slain pastor of Bethel Baptist Church and Moderator of Albarka Baptist Association, alongside numerous other church members and leaders.
The litany of atrocities culminated in a plea for urgent intervention from the highest echelons of governance. Saleh implored President Tinubu and the Plateau State Government to address the escalating insecurity, advocating for the establishment of state police as a critical step towards restoring peace and security.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Governor Mutfwang expressed solidarity with the embattled church and its members, vowing unwavering commitment to quelling the violence and restoring tranquility to the embattled communities. He commended the Baptist Conference for its steadfast dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence despite the harrowing challenges they faced.

The stark reality of senseless bloodshed and displacement served as a poignant reminder of the urgent imperative to act swiftly and decisively in safeguarding the lives and dignity of all citizens.
