This form of justice, known as jungle justice, sees perpetrators assuming multiple roles, acting as accusers, prosecutors, and judges. Instances of jungle justice are widespread, spanning from Lagos to Abuja, Port Harcourt to Kebbi, and Uyo to Kano. Alleged thieves and kidnappers often face lynching for crimes as minor as stealing a cellphone, a motorcycle, or even women’s undergarments, which have seen a sudden surge in prevalence.
One such incident occurred approximately a year ago at Urua Ekpa Junction in Akwa Ibom State, where a suspected motorcycle thief was apprehended by an enraged mob. He endured merciless beatings before being burned alive, all before the arrival of law enforcement. Similarly, on February 2, 2018, another suspected motorcycle thief met a grisly fate as he was burned to death by a mob in Yawuri, Kebbi State. In yet another instance, a man accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle in front of a mosque at Kuje Market in Abuja was caught and set ablaze by local traders.
False accusations further compound the issue, leading to the lynching of individuals who are later proven Innocent. One such victim was Temitope Adeoye, a young man from Cele- Ijesha. area of Lagos State. On February 11, 2019, Temitope, who worked at Tincan Island, Apapa Port, was on his way home. when he was falsely accused of theft by some boys in the area. Despite his protests, he was violently attacked, stabbed, and ultimately set on fire, leaving behind a pregnant girlfriend.
The prevalence of jungle justice underscores a concerning erosion of trust in the formal justice system and a disturbing trend towards vigilantism. Without proper legal proceedings, Innocent lives are unjustly taken, and
communities descend into lawlessness.
Efforts to combat jungle justice must
address root causes such as distrust in law enforcement, lack of access to justice, and societal breakdown. Strengthening the formal justice system, promoting community policing Initiatives, and raising awareness about the dangers of vigilantism are crucial steps towards restoring the rule of law and protecting human rights.
