In the annals of history, there are many crimes, but none is as disturbing as the brutal murder of two women accused of kidnapping in Osun State, Nigeria. The incident, which occurred on Monday sparked outrage and condemnation from human rights groups, civil society organizations, and the general public.
According to PM NEWS, the two women, whose identities have not been disclosed, were part of a three-member gang that attempted to abduct a child from Ori Eru area of Iwo town. However, their plan was foiled by some vigilant residents who apprehended them and raised an alarm. The third suspect, a man, managed to escape from the scene.
The angry mob, which comprised of youths and traders, did not wait for the intervention of the police or the judiciary. They took the law into their own hands and dragged the women to the Ojude Oba area, where they were beaten, stripped, and set on fire in front of the palace of the traditional ruler of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi.
A witness, who spoke to PM NEWS on the condition of anonymity, said the mob was enraged by the spate of kidnappings and ritual killings in the state and decided to mete out instant justice to the suspects. He said the mob ignored the pleas of the women, who claimed they were innocent and had nothing to do with the alleged crime.
*They were shouting ‘ole, ole’ (thief, thief) and throwing stones and petrol at them. They did not listen to anyone who tried to stop them. They said they wanted to teach them a lesson and deter others from doing the same thing. It was a horrible sight to behold. I have never seen such barbarism in my life,” the witness said.
The witness added that the police arrived at the scene after the women had been burnt beyond recognition. He said the police dispersed the crowd and took the charred remains of the women to the mortuary. He said no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said it has launched an investigation into the matter. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yemisi Opalola, said the command condemned the act of jungle justice and warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

violation of their right to life, dignity, and fair hearing. We also urge the public to respect the rule of law and human rights and refrain from taking justice into their own hands,” Opalola said.
