A large number of frustrated and enraged women, many Of whom widows, staged a recent protest across the streets of kano state over the outrageous rise in flour prices in the state.
The women were left with no other choice but to voice out their predicaments as the economic situation of the Country is getting out of hand and if this persists, it would be difficult to even have one square meal per day for most people.
On Saturday, 3rd February 2024, the protesters who are known for selling bread in the region also known as gurasa” marched through the streets holding several placards with written words While bemoaning how their only source of income had been severely crumbled and greatly affected by the rising prices of common goods in the market due to inflation.
The women who cared less about the harsh harmattan period currently across the country made a plea to the state government and authorities for assistance while lamenting that they would go hungry if a lot Of urgent matters are left unchecked.
In addition, many of the impacted women, according to the group’ s leader Fatima Auwal, were already in debt to flour suppliers because they couldn’ t afford the material.
” Majority of our members cannot afford to buy flour, which is the main source of raw material for producing ‘ gurasa’ . The economic situation in Nigeria has degenerated from bad to worse•
” Many Of our members, who struggle to produce, are already indebted to numerous flour suppliers. We can no longer afford to pay the school fees of our children anymore, just as feeding is now a huge burden on us, which cannot be postponed• , she cried out.
In the meantime, Auwal made a plea to President Bola Tinubu and other pertinent parties to take into account the predicament Of Women, particularly widows as well as others suffering across the nation and act by stabilizing the current economy disaster in the country if not, this would only result in a situation that would turn the country upside down.
