BREAKING! NLC Finally Proposes This Shocking Amount Of Money As Minimum Wage For Civil Servants
Organized Labour in Nigeria has proposed a substantial increase in the minimum wage to $300, citing inflation and the soaring cost of living as reasons for the inadequacy of the current wage of N30, 000. This proposal was presented during a recent meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council, where union representatives highlighted the impact of the high exchange rate and fuel subsidy removal on purchasing power.
Chairman of the Trade Union Side, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, emphasized the urgent need to review the minimum wage, noting that it has been eroded by economic factors, making it insufficient to cover basic necessities. He called for prompt payment of the agreed N35, 000 wage award and advocated for a new living wage to alleviate the plight of workers.
With the official exchange rate, the proposed minimum wage would amount to N444, 600 per month for the lowest- paid worker in Nigeria. Anthony expressed concern over the non- remittance of third- party deductions, such as cooperative and union dues, which has posed operational challenges for organizations and affected workers’ salaries, pensions, and insurance schemes.
In response, Dr. Folasade Yemi- Esan, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, emphasized the importance of dialogue between organized labor and the government to ensure peace, stability, and productivity. She highlighted the theme of the current council meetings, focusing on digitalization as a tool for improving service delivery in the public service.
