President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, voiced apprehensions regarding the adherence of the majority of governors in the 37- Member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage to the proposed base pay structure. The committee, inaugurated by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, was instituted with the objective of establishing a decent living wage, aligning with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage Act of 2019.
In his appearance on Channels Television’ s Politics Today, Ajaero underscored that a significant number of governors participating in the committee were either not complying with the minimum wage or were inconsistently implementing it. He drew attention to the conspicuous absence of governors fully adhering to the minimum wage, emphasizing that the composition of the committee appeared to favor those with compliance issues, raising questions about the fairness of representation.
Ajaero queried the rationale behind including governors facing compliance challenges in the committee, implying that the federal government’ s decision might have consequences as time unfolds. His concerns extended to the perceived lack of sufficient representation from governors who were fully complying with the minimum wage requirements.
The Minimum Wage Act of 2019, signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari, followed the National Assembly’ s amendment of the National Minimum Wage Act in 2017. This amendment mandated periodic reviews of workers’ remuneration every five years, reflecting a commitment to ensuring just and equitable compensation for the nation’ s workforce.
