Renowned Nigerian poet and intellectual, Odia Ofeimun, delivered a powerful message at the January Reading and Writers Dialogue organized by the Abuja Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). Ofeimun expressed concerns over the challenges President Bola Tinubu faces in delivering on his promises to the Nigerian people.
Ofeimun highlighted the external pressures faced by President Tinubu, particularly from forces in the West, which could hinder his efforts to prioritize the well- being of Nigerians. He warned that if the president succumbs to these pressures and fails to address internal issues, the people might turn against him.
A key focus of Ofeimun’ s address was the urgent need for free education in Nigeria. He argued that every president should embrace the idea of free education for the benefit of the Nigerian child. Drawing parallels with global economic powers, he emphasized that societies offering free education are more likely to achieve development.
The poet singled out China as an example, noting how their commitment to education and technology has propelled them ahead. Ofeimun criticized Nigerian leaders for not prioritizing education, stating that by neglecting this responsibility, they are impoverishing the entire nation.
Emphasizing the role of poets as the conscience of society, Ofeimun urged young poets to embrace activism. While appreciating the rise of activist- poetry, he stressed the importance of having a script, asserting that human memory alone is insufficient for sustaining impactful messages.
