Akpoti- Uduaghan was suspended on Thursday for six months over allegations of violating Senate rules and engaging in misconduct. Her suspension followed a heated confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the Red Chamber two weeks prior.
The decision to suspend Akpoti- Uduaghan has sparked debates within the political landscape, with some viewing it as an excessive measure against a lawmaker who has been vocal on critical issues. The suspension was imposed after she accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that further deepened tensions within the Senate.
Senator Shehu Sani, who served as the representative for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate between 2015 and 2019, reacted to the development in a cryptic Facebook post. He likened Akpoti- Uduaghan’ s fate to his own past experience in the Senate when he nearly faced a six- month suspension for exposing the actual salaries and allowances of lawmakers on live television.
Shehu Sani suggested that Akpoti- Uduaghan’ s accusations against the Senate President made it difficult for other lawmakers to openly support her. According to him, Senators fear the repercussions of aligning with a colleague who challenges the leadership.
He wrote: ” When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators, it nearly earned me a SIX- month suspension if not for Divine Intervention. Just know that if you are there and you blow whistle too loudly, you will be ‘ On your Own’ , no senator go bring him head and neck to support you. ”
His remarks imply that the culture of self- preservation among lawmakers often prevents them from backing a colleague who takes on the leadership, especially in a matter as sensitive as an allegation against the Senate President.
