A former immigration officer has been apprehended by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command during an operation aimed at intercepting the sale of advanced firearms intended for bandits in the Abuja- Kaduna forest. This arrest was the result of an intelligence- led operation, although the officer’ s name has not been disclosed to the public.
Mustafa Mohammed, the Officer in Charge of the Anti- Kidnapping Unit, spoke to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday about the operation. He emphasized the importance of the intelligence that led to the prevention of these firearms from reaching individuals who could have used them for criminal activities. Mohammed stated, ” Acting on intelligence, the command intercepted these guns from a dismissed immigration officer attempting to sell them to bandits terrorizing the Abuja- Kaduna forest. The intelligence was received in time, and the arms were intercepted while he was trying to make the delivery. ”
Among the seized weapons was a Scorpion CZ EVO3, a highly sophisticated fully automatic firearm equipped with an integrated silencer. This particular model is the latest version from 2022 and can function in single, automatic, or burst modes. With a magazine capacity of 20 to 30 rounds, depending on the configuration, the weapon poses a significant threat if it falls into the wrong hands. Additionally, authorities recovered 52 rounds of ammunition, which could have exacerbated the situation had they been used by criminals.
Tunji Disu, the FCT Commissioner of Police, also provided insights into the broader efforts of the police in tackling crime in the Federal Capital Territory. He reported that a total of 300 suspects were arrested between January 1 and February 28, 2025. Disu explained, ” In its sustained effort to rid the Federal Capital Territory of crime and criminal elements, the FCT Police Command has intensified its operations, carrying out a series of high- impact raids during this period. ”
These operations, characterized by strategic planning and execution based on intelligence, have resulted in numerous arrests and the recovery of weapons and illegal substances. Specifically, the police have apprehended 59 armed robbers, 10 kidnappers, and their informants, while neutralizing nine armed robbers and seven kidnappers. Additionally, 16 individuals affiliated with various cults have been arrested.
Disu highlighted the commitment of the police to ensuring the safety of residents in the Federal Capital Territory. He mentioned that specialized tactical teams were deployed to carry out raids in known criminal hideouts and high- risk areas such as Dei- Dei, Karu, Gwarinpa, Jikwoyi, Karimo, and Maitama. The police are also focusing on abandoned buildings frequently utilized for illicit activities, promising continuous monitoring and subsequent operations to address these issues.
