Godiya Akwashiki, born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa State, Nigeria, is a prominent Nigerian politician known for his extensive legislative career. He began his educational journey at Government Primary School, Angba Iggah, obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate in 1987.
He then attended Government Technical College, Assakio, where he earned his Senior Secondary Certificate in Education (WASSCE) in 1993. Demonstrating a commitment to further education, Akwashiki graduated from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Akwashiki’ s political career commenced in 2011 when he was elected to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Nassarawa Eggon West constituency under the People’ s Democratic Party (PDP). During his first term (2011– 2015), he served as the Majority Leader. In his second term (2015– 2019), he was appointed Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly. In November 2016, citing internal crises within the PDP, Akwashiki defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In 2019, Akwashiki transitioned to national politics, winning the Nasarawa North senatorial seat under the APC. However, his tenure was marred by a notable incident in March 2019. Akwashiki was assaulted and stripped naked in Abuja over allegations of seducing the wife of a fellow politician, Danladi Halilu Envulanza.
The incident, widely circulated through a viral video, led to a police investigation. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command later cleared Akwashiki of the allegations, stating that the claims of seduction were unsubstantiated. The investigation instead indicted Envulanza and his associates for criminal conspiracy, abduction, assault, and defamation of character. The parties eventually settled the matter amicably out of court.
In June 2022, Akwashiki resigned from the APC due to alleged irregularities during the party’ s primaries. He expressed dissatisfaction with the manipulation of delegates’ lists, which led to his withdrawal from the primaries.
