Nigerians who purchased prepaid meters under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) scheme should take note, as the Federal Government has ordered electricity distribution companies (Discos) to publish details of all meter refunds made to customers. This directive, issued through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aims to ensure transparency and encourage more people to participate in the metering scheme.
According to NERC, any customer who paid upfront for a meter under the MAP scheme is entitled to a refund. The regulation states that the cost of the meter should be repaid through energy credits, which are deducted from electricity bills over time. However, several consumer groups have complained that many Discos are not following through with these refunds as they should.
To address this issue, NERC has now mandated all Discos to publish details of the refunds on their websites. This move will allow customers to track their refunds and ensure they are receiving what they are owed.
With over seven million unmetered customers in Nigeria, the government is actively working to close the metering gap. The Presidential Metering Initiative was recently introduced to speed up the process, ensuring all registered electricity users get meters. Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, emphasized that metering all customers is crucial for reducing losses in the power sector and ensuring fair electricity billing.
Meanwhile, NERC held its first Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders meeting of 2025, where key issues such as tariff methodology, financial evaluation of the power market, and transitioning to a multi-tier electricity system were discussed.
