Reports have circulated that Governor Chukwuma Soludo allegedly banned women from walking the streets without wearing bras and pants, with violators at risk of arrest. In various communities, town criers reportedly warned residents about the alleged ban, prompting a significant shift in fashion choices. Similarly, women who previously wore revealing outfits without undergarments have disappeared from public spaces, particularly in areas like Aroma Junction and Abakaliki Street in Awka. These changes have also driven up haircut costs in Awka, with prices surging from ₦2, 000 to ₦5, 000 due to increased demand.
The crackdown on extreme fashion styles is reportedly linked to efforts to curb kidnapping and cyber fraud (commonly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo). However, the alleged enforcement of dress codes has drawn mixed reactions. While some residents comply due to family pressure or fear of harassment, others question why the government appears to focus on appearances rather than addressing broader security challenges.
State officials have responded to these claims, categorically denying any directive targeting dress codes. Dr. Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, clarified that the rumors are a misrepresentation of the newly enacted Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025. He described reports of arrests for hairstyles or lack of undergarments as baseless and misleading.
” In some cases, town criers announced that individuals with dreadlocks or sagging trousers would be arrested. In others, they claimed women without bras and pants would face similar consequences, ” Mefor explained. ” These statements are entirely false and not part of the new law. ”
Mefor emphasized that the Homeland Security Law focuses on combating criminal activities and eliminating harmful practices such as rituals performed by native doctors for criminals. He warned town criers against spreading unverified information and advised community Presidents- General to consult government authorities before making public announcements.
Governor Soludo’ s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, also dismissed the allegations as fabrications intended to mislead the public and tarnish the government’ s reputation. ” We categorically state that this information is false and mischievous, ” Aburime said.
