SERIOUS TENSION Hits Judiciary As Nigerian Chief Justice Drops Bombshell Hours After Court Adjourned Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Indefinitely
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere- Ekun, has raised alarm over persistent issues within the country’ s judiciary, despite ongoing reform efforts. In particular, the CJN expressed concern over allegations of corruption, delays in the dispensation of justice, and perceptions of bias, all of which have continued to undermine public trust in the judicial system. This statement came shortly after Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following Kanu’ s objections to her presiding over the case. He claimed that Nyako had previously recused herself, rendering her unfit to hear his case.
Justice Kekere- Ekun made these comments on Monday in Abuja, during the opening of the 2025 hybrid refresher course for judges of superior courts. She lamented the ongoing challenges that continue to plague the judicial system, despite significant reforms. Kekere- Ekun emphasized the profound impact these issues have on public trust, pointing out that the judiciary’ s effectiveness hinges on the confidence the public has in its ability to administer justice impartially and efficiently.
ACCUSED Justice Binta Of Being Biased
” In spite of our collective efforts, challenges persist; allegations of corruption, delays in the dispensation of justice, and perceptions of bias or inefficiency remain issues of concern, ” the CJN said. She further explained that such issues not only weaken the authority of the judiciary but also create a harmful disconnect between the courts and society. This eroded trust in the judiciary, she warned, has far- reaching consequences for the country’ s legal system and its role in upholding the rule of law.
