NATO membership for Ukraine unrealistic – US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth gives reason
The United States Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has said that the US does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement.
This is even as Hegseth told NATO allies that “returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective” as President Donald Trump works to bring an end to the war with Russia.
Fox News reports that Hegseth spoke Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Belgium.
Hegseth also said he was in Brussels to directly and unambiguously express that stark strategic realities prevent the United States from being primarily focused on the security of Europe.
The Defense Secretary also told the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Belgium that “stark strategic realities prevent the United States from being primarily focused on the security of Europe”.
According to him, “US is focusing on securing our own borders and deterring war with China in the Pacific”.
“A durable peace for Ukraine must include robust security guarantees to ensure that the war will not begin again,” Hegseth said Wednesday.
“The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement. Instead, any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops.”
DAILY POST reports that President Vladimir Putin of Russia launched a larger military conflict with Ukraine in 2022, which is still ongoing.
