The Plateau State Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the brutal killing of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State. The suspects, identified as Samuel Dang Kat and Zatshinen Wubwerwe, allegedly participated in the attack that led to the death of the victim, Safwan Adamu Fade.
The tragic incident occurred on January 22, 2025, at the Pankshin township stadium, where a group of hoodlums assaulted the corps member. According to the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, the police received a report about the attack on January 23, 2025, at approximately 7: 00 a. m. The report was filed by a local resident, Umbule Boreng Reuben, who informed authorities that the victim had been severely beaten by unidentified attackers around 6: 00 p. m. the previous day.
Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Pankshin division was immediately instructed to lead a team of officers to the crime scene. The victim was found in critical condition and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Initially, doctors at the hospital stabilized him, but due to complications arising from his injuries, he was later transferred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for advanced medical care. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Commissioner Adesina confirmed that during the course of their investigation, the police were able to apprehend two suspects linked to the crime. However, he emphasized that efforts are still underway to track down other individuals who were involved in the attack but managed to escape. He assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring that all those responsible for the gruesome act are arrested and brought to justice.
The late Safwan Adamu Fade was a corps member serving at the Federal College of Education (FCE) in Pankshin, fulfilling his mandatory one- year national service. His untimely death has sparked outrage and concern, particularly among fellow corps members and residents of the community. Many are calling for improved security measures to protect NYSC members, who are often posted to various parts of the country to serve in different capacities.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of corps members serving in different states, particularly in areas prone to violence and criminal activities. Over the years, there have been multiple cases of NYSC members being attacked, harassed, or even killed in different parts of Nigeria. The program, designed to foster national unity and integration, has repeatedly come under scrutiny due to security threats faced by corps members.
The Plateau State Police Command has assured the public that investigations will continue until all perpetrators of the crime are arrested and prosecuted.
