Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El- Rufai, has expressed concerns over the deteriorating relationship between President Bola Tinubu and Northern Nigeria, drawing parallels to former President Goodluck Jonathan’ s challenges prior to the 2015 elections. In a recent post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, El- Rufai cautioned that Tinubu’ s administration might be heading towards a political misstep reminiscent of Jonathan’ s era.
El- Rufai’ s remarks come amid statements from the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently urged Northern politicians to set aside any presidential ambitions for 2027, emphasizing that Tinubu is expected to complete his constitutionally permitted two terms. Ganduje made these comments during a meeting with members of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre and the Tinubu Northern Youth Forum at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

In his post titled ” 2027: South West, Tinubu’ s supporters playing with fire– Part 1, ” El- Rufai stated, ” It is actually premature to be talking about 2027 elections less than two years into our first tenure, but what is happening in the political arena is forcing me to speak to it, for as they say, ‘ a stitch in time saves nine’ . ” He emphasized his desire for the APC to secure re- election in 2027 but acknowledged significant concerns.
Reflecting on the 2019 party primaries, El- Rufai noted his previous warnings about the APC’ s trajectory, suggesting that if the party did not adhere to its progressive ideals and remained solely focused on winning elections at all costs, it risked a fate similar to the People’ s Democratic Party (PDP), which lost power after 16 years. He remarked, ” When I wrote that, we were not faced with the current situation we are faced with. Indeed, I never imagined that we would be in the current situation any time soon, surely not under President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. ”
El- Rufai expressed concern over the growing discord within the party and among its supporters, particularly regarding the administration’ s relationship with the North. He observed, ” Less than two years into the tenure, we are witnesses to how the relationship between the north and President Bola Tinubu or rather his administration is quickly deteriorating, driven by the words and conduct of, unfortunately, many from the president’ s geopolitical zone and tribe. ”
Drawing a parallel to the 2015 elections, El- Rufai highlighted that beyond the performance issues of the Jonathan administration, it was the perceived attitude and actions towards the North that contributed significantly to Jonathan’ s electoral defeat. He warned that underestimating the North and displaying disrespect could lead to political downfall, as evidenced in the past.
He further cautioned that current behaviors within the APC, especially from individuals in the South- West, mirror past mistakes. El- Rufai stated, ” Today, as I look at the rambunctiousness of some APC members and fellow supporters of President Bola Tinubu, especially from the South- west geopolitical zone, I wonder if people have any sense of history and if they truly understand Nigerian politics. ”
While acknowledging Tinubu’ s political acumen, El- Rufai emphasized that politics is a collective endeavor and not solely reliant on one individual’ s prowess. He stressed the importance of recognizing the North’ s significant role in Nigerian politics, stating, ” Love or loathe that fact, the north remains the kingmaker in Nigerian politics, at least, as of today. Any politician or political party that plays with that reality might pay a steep political price for it. ”
In response to speculations about potential threats to his freedom, El- Rufai dismissed rumors of possible arrest or exile. He affirmed his commitment to remain active in Nigeria’ s political landscape, stating, ” I have now put all my previous academic and language- learning plans on hold and will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before.
