In a shocking case of child abuse, the police in Onitsha, Anambra State, have arrested a middle- aged woman, identified as Uchenna, for brutally assaulting her 10- year- old maid, Chisom Nwafor. The disturbing incident, which took place at Osuma Street, Onitsha, has sparked widespread outrage and renewed discussions about the mistreatment of young domestic workers in Nigeria.
According to reports, Chisom, originally from Enugu- Abo in Enugu State, had been living with Uchenna as a domestic help. The abuse allegedly escalated on a Sunday morning when the young girl was tending to her madam’ s child, changing her wet clothes. Uchenna, upon entering the room, reportedly flew into a rage and began shouting at Chisom before launching a violent attack.
Eyewitness accounts and the victim’ s own testimony describe a harrowing sequence of events. Uchenna allegedly rushed to the kitchen, grabbed a heavy pestle, and struck Chisom multiple times on her back. The relentless beating continued until a final blow landed on the girl’ s left arm, breaking it instantly. As Chisom lay on the floor crying in pain, her madam stormed into her bedroom, retrieved a razor blade, and returned to inflict even more horrifying injuries.
” She tore my panties and started cutting my private part with a razor blade, ” Chisom recounted in tears. ” I screamed, but she did not stop. After she was done, she poured something on the cuts, and it burned badly. ”
Neighbors, hearing the girl’ s agonizing screams, rushed to the house and intervened. Seeing the severity of Chisom’ s injuries, they immediately reported the incident to the police. Officers arrived promptly and arrested Uchenna, who was taken into custody. The young girl was rushed to a hospital, where she received urgent medical attention.
Authorities condemned the act, describing it as one of the worst cases of child abuse in recent times. The police assured the public that Uchenna would be prosecuted under relevant child protection and assault laws.
