Popular Filmmaker is Dead
David Lynch, the legendary American filmmaker known for iconic works such as Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has died at the age of 78.
His family announced the news on his official Facebook page on Thursday evening, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the statement read. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.

Born in Missoula, Montana, in 1946, Lynch pursued his passion for art and film, attending art college in the 1960s. In 1971, he moved to Los Angeles to study filmmaking at the AFI Conservatory, where he began production on his first feature, Eraserhead.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Lynch earned critical acclaim and three Best Director Oscar nominations for Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive.
His final major project, Twin Peaks: The Return, aired in 2017, revitalizing the groundbreaking TV series that first captivated audiences in the early 1990s.
In August of last year, Lynch spoke candidly about his health in an interview with Sight and Sound magazine, revealing his struggle with emphysema, a chronic lung condition linked to his years of smoking.
Despite his diagnosis, Lynch remained optimistic and determined to continue creating. “I would do it remotely if it comes to it,” he said. “I wouldn’t like that so much.”
Lynch’s personal life included four marriages. He is survived by two daughters and two sons.
