In a statement released on Saturday, the Nigerian Army detailed the incident, which took place in Osina, within the Ideator North Local Government Area of Imo State. According to the report, troops from the 34 Artillery Brigade were returning from routine patrols when they received an urgent call about an attack by IPOB/ESN forces on the community.
Upon their arrival, the soldiers engaged the attackers with significant firepower, reportedly inflicting casualties among the insurgents, although specific numbers were not disclosed. The army noted that the assailants fled in disarray. Tragically, the engagement resulted in the death of two soldiers, with an additional soldier classified as missing. The attackers managed to seize an AK- 47 rifle and a tear gas launcher during the confrontation.
The army confirmed that the bodies of the fallen soldiers had been recovered, and their forces continued the pursuit of the fleeing assailants. Further clashes were reported with IPOB/ESN elements at the nearby Nkwachi Community, where one insurgent was neutralized in the ensuing firefight. Those who survived the encounter reportedly fled into the forest, with one AK- 47 rifle, equipped with a fully loaded magazine, retrieved from the scene.
The relentless pursuit of the insurgents led troops deeper into the Umalouma forest, where another fierce firefight erupted. In total, five AK- 47 rifles, a Fabrique Nationale rifle, and multiple magazines were recovered during these operations.
