Peter Obi has voiced his condemnation of the recent killing of a Catholic priest in Anambra State and is urging for an end to the ongoing violence that plagues the nation. Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, was tragically shot dead along the Onitsha- Owerri Expressway on Thursday. Obi described this senseless act as deeply disturbing.
In a heartfelt message on his X account, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election expressed his sorrow over the loss, stating, ” Today, I woke up to the heartbreaking news of the tragic and unfortunate death of Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala. ” He reflected on the brutality of the crime, noting that Fr. Okonkwo was shot by unknown assailants in Ihiala. Obi emphasized the alarming frequency of violence against productive members of society, lamenting that such bloodshed is ” beyond heartbreaking. ”
Obi’ s statement also highlighted the wider implications of the violence affecting communities across the country, saying, ” In many parts of the nation, the blood of our brothers and sisters whose lives were cut short by insecurity continues to cry. ” He posed a poignant question about the future of the nation, asking, ” How many more lives will be wasted before we rise to action and put an end to this menace confronting our future as a nation? ” Drawing on his close association with the College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala, he underscored the devastating impact this tragedy has on the college community.
Extending his heartfelt condolences, Obi reached out to the family of the deceased priest as well as the management and students of the College of Nursing Sciences. ” I extend my sincere condolences to his immediate family, the proprietor, and the entire management, staff, and students of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala, ” he wrote. He concluded with a prayer for peace and healing, saying, ” May God grant him eternal rest and give us all the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss. May God heal our bleeding nation. ”
