Igbo Political Leaders Sabotaging Nnamdi Kanu’s RELEASE- Ohanaeze Ndigbo Reveals
The apex Igbo socio- cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has openly condemned certain political leaders in the Southeast for allegedly hindering efforts to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement signed by its Secretary- General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze accused some Southeast Governors and a former Governor of prioritizing personal political ambitions over the welfare of the region. The group claimed these leaders, while publicly supporting Kanu’ s release, privately discouraged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from taking decisive action on the matter.
The statement singled out two serving Governors, alleging that their focus on securing a Vice Presidential nomination for 2027 had undermined collective efforts to address the issue. Ohanaeze also accused these leaders of using the insecurity in the Southeast to justify inflated security budgets while ignoring the suffering of the people.
” After five months of inaction, one must ask: Why did they fail? Their indifference highlights a troubling disconnect from the harsh realities faced by our people, ” the statement read. The group warned that Kanu’ s continued detention was worsening violence and insecurity in the Southeast.
Ohanaeze criticized remarks made by a Southeast Governor who suggested that releasing Kanu would not resolve the region’ s insecurity. According to the group, the Governor proposed confining Kanu to a State Government House as a solution, an idea dismissed by Ohanaeze as both insincere and ineffective.
The organisation further rebuked Southeast Governors for failing to present a united front to President Tinubu, emphasizing the importance of offering assurances and commitments to facilitate Kanu’ s release. It expressed concern that political ambitions were taking precedence over the collective interests of the region.
Additionally, Ohanaeze raised alarm over alleged attempts to manipulate its leadership ahead of the January 2025 elections. The group accused certain individuals of scheming to install an Imo State native as a representative of Rivers State to influence the selection of the next President- General of Ohanaeze. Such actions, the group argued, threaten the unity and collective interests of the Igbo people.

Despite these criticisms, Ohanaeze commended some Governors for adopting innovative measures to address insecurity, including granting amnesty to repentant criminals. The group assured the public that discreet negotiations were ongoing to secure Kanu’ s release, reiterating its commitment to the region’ s welfare.
