Prominent groups have expressed growing concern over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ s continued silence regarding calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The demands for Kanu’ s release have gained momentum, yet the administration’ s response remains largely passive, drawing criticism from various quarters.

In a series of statements issued on Tuesday, both the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) and the pan- Nigerian youth organization, 372 Youth Empowerment Network, renewed their appeals to the Nigerian president to consider a political solution to resolve the issue and release Kanu.
AVID, a group comprising military veterans of Igbo descent, emphasized that Kanu’ s continued detention represents a profound injustice, not just to him, but to all Nigerians. The statement, signed by AVID’ s President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia, and Vice- President, Prince Joe Nduka, declared that ” injustice to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is injustice to all. ” AVID pointed to the failure of former President Muhammadu Buhari’ s strategy to quell separatist agitation through Kanu’ s prolonged detention, arguing that a new, conciliatory approach is needed under Tinubu’ s leadership.
” His (Kanu’ s) popularity has multiplied over the past years, as has his unshakeable stand on our collective conviction as a people. His nonviolent approach makes him more likeable, ” AVID said, highlighting the leader’ s growing support base both among Igbos and non- Igbos. The group further emphasized that Kanu’ s efforts have gained him followers nationwide, with many seeing him as a symbol of justice and resilience.
The veterans also expressed concern about the role Kanu plays as a prominent figure within the Igbo community. ” Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains a brother, son, and father to many Igbos and non- Igbos who have associated with him and seen his positive vision for everyone, ” the statement read.
The statement also criticized Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State for changing his stance on the matter. While Soludo had previously suggested that Kanu’ s release would reduce crime in the region, the veteran group now found his revised position inconsistent with his earlier statements. ” We strongly disagree with him now, ” the statement noted, urging Soludo to reaffirm his initial stance, which advocated for Kanu’ s release as a means of reducing insecurity.
On its part, the 372 Youth Empowerment Network, a youth- led organization with a national reach, framed their appeal to President Tinubu in the context of national healing and reconciliation. In a statement signed by the group’ s leaders, including President Mohammed Saidu and National Secretary Toyin Deinde Komolafe, the network called for Kanu’ s release on compassionate grounds, arguing that such an action would foster long- term peace in the southeastern states of Nigeria.
” We believe that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be a political master stroke to bring about lasting peace within the southeastern states of Nigeria and its environs, ” said the youth network. The group stressed the importance of addressing past wrongs and healing national wounds, stating that forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity were essential to moving the country forward.
Acknowledging that mistakes had been made in the past, the youth organization highlighted that the time had come to let go of old grievances and work together for the common good of Nigeria. ” This is the time in the history of our nation that we need all hands to be on deck to save our dear country from the vagaries of war, criminalities, sectionalism, tribalism, religious bigotry, division, and other vices inimical to the growth and sustainable peace of Nigeria, ” the statement said.
The group further appealed to President Tinubu to use his office to demonstrate his commitment to national unity and democratic values. ” We appeal to Mr. President to please deploy the instrumentality of his highly exalted office, as the father of the nation, to immediately order the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention to demonstrate his widely acclaimed democratic credentials and love for Ndigbo in particular, ” they urged.
