Nigerian commercial banks, including Zenith Bank, Access Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and others, will be closed on Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26, and Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in observance of the Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year holidays.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji- Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’ s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, on Monday, December 23.
In his holiday message, Tunji- Ojo extended warm greetings to Nigerians, encouraging citizens to embrace the spirit of love, peace, and unity that the season represents.
” The Christmas season is a time for spiritual reflection and national renewal. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, let us demonstrate kindness and goodwill toward one another, regardless of our differences, ” the minister stated.
Tunji- Ojo further emphasized the importance of family and community bonds in fostering harmony and contributing to national development. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’ s commitment to ensuring peace, security, and prosperity across the nation, expressing optimism about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ s Renewed Hope Agenda as a pathway to a brighter and more prosperous 2025.
During the holiday period, banks are expected to notify customers via email and social media about the closure of branches nationwide. Customers are advised to use electronic banking platforms for transactions, including mobile banking, internet banking, USSD codes, and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
To ensure smooth cash access, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks to make cash available at ATMs and over- the- counter services during the holidays. Customers experiencing difficulties with ATMs can report non- compliance using dedicated state- specific phone numbers provided by the CBN.
Adjustments By POS Operators
In a related development, Point of Sale (PoS) operators are adapting to recent policy changes by the CBN, which restricted daily cash withdrawals on PoS machines to a maximum of N100, 000. To address these restrictions, operators have adjusted their withdrawal and deposit charges to continue serving customers effectively.
These developments highlight the evolving nature of banking and financial services in Nigeria as the holiday season approaches.
