Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has taken a significant step toward improving workers’ welfare by announcing the implementation of a new minimum wage of N80, 000 for state employees. This landmark decision, made in collaboration with the leadership of organized labor in the state, reflects the administration’ s commitment to enhancing the standard of living for its workforce. According to Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, the nominal implementation of this new minimum wage structure will commence on July 1, 2024, while workers will begin receiving payments based on the new wage from January 2025.
The announcement has been widely welcomed, as it promises to elevate the financial stability of workers in Oyo State. The agreement also ensures that workers retiring between July and December 2024 will have their retirement benefits calculated based on the revised wage structure. This progressive move aligns with Governor Makinde’ s consistent efforts to prioritize labor- friendly policies. Since 2019, his administration has introduced initiatives such as the traditional 13th- month salary, which will continue alongside the new wage structure.
Oyo State currently allocates over N6 billion monthly for salaries, totaling approximately N77 billion annually, making it one of Nigeria’ s leading states in terms of labor compensation. This financial commitment underscores the state’ s dedication to supporting its workforce. The government has also urged ministries and departments to enhance revenue generation to sustain this increased expenditure, highlighting the importance of improved internally generated revenue (IGR).
This development adds to Governor Makinde’ s growing list of achievements, bolstering his reputation as a leader committed to inclusive growth. His administration continues to champion policies that prioritize the well- being of residents while laying a solid foundation for sustainable economic progress in Oyo State.
